How Jasmin's voice works

Jasmin speaks using ElevenLabs or OpenAI voice APIs configured for text-to-speech output only. The system sends text to the API and receives synthesised audio. No microphone input, speech recognition, or student voice recording is performed at any point.

Mood awareness

Jasmin's emotional responsiveness comes from user-selected mood emoji inputs and text typed by the student. No biometric data — voice, facial, or otherwise — is captured or analysed to infer emotional state.

Voice disclosure

All voice output is AI-generated audio. Students are informed of this at session start and via the persistent "AI" tag in the top bar. Voice is a tool for accessibility and engagement — it does not represent a human tutor.

Growth-mindset design — celebrates progress, not pressure

Design intent

StudyHub's engagement features — streaks, XP, level-ups, and encouragement messages — are designed using evidence-based educational psychology principles: intrinsic motivation, growth mindset, and consistent positive reinforcement.

Feature rationale

  • Streaks (🔥): Reward consistent study habits. Streaks reset if a day is missed — this reflects real-world habit research — but the language never frames a reset as failure.
  • XP & Levels: Celebrate cumulative effort rather than exam scores. Titles like "Practitioner" and "Expert" reflect learning journey stages, not competitive ranking.
  • Encouragement messages: Fully customisable. Defaults use growth-mindset framing (e.g. "Hard things are hard — that's not failing, that's learning"). Configurable in Settings.
  • Hearts & celebrations: Positive affirmation on breakthroughs. Can be disabled in Settings.

Safeguards

Minor mode (active when user identifies as under 18) reduces pressure framing and enables calmer celebration mechanics. All gamification can be disabled by the user via Settings at any time.

Known risks & mitigations

  • AI hallucination in educational content: Jasmin may generate inaccurate explanations. Mitigation: persistent "verify with your teacher/textbook" prompts; AI disclosure on every session.
  • Age-inappropriate responses: Educational content may not always self-regulate for younger students. Mitigation: minor mode adjusts system prompt to age-appropriate language and tone.
  • Over-reliance on AI tutor: Students may substitute Jasmin for human support. Mitigation: Jasmin's framing encourages curiosity and asking teachers, not dependency.
  • Emotional pressure from gamification: Streak mechanics could create anxiety. Mitigation: growth-mindset language; gamification toggle; minor mode reduces pressure framing.
  • Bias in explanations: AI models may produce systematically different quality responses for different student contexts. Ongoing: monitored through user feedback.

  • Conversation history: Chat messages with Jasmin are sent to Claude (Anthropic) API for response generation. Anthropic's API privacy policy applies.
  • Voice output: Text is sent to ElevenLabs/OpenAI APIs to generate audio. No student voice is sent to any API.

No tracking, no ads

StudyHub contains no analytics, advertising, or third-party tracking. There is no user account — no email, no password, no identity stored outside your own device.

Minors

If you identified as under 18, minor mode is applied. The same data handling applies — nothing additional is collected for minors. Parents or guardians can review this panel at any time.
